James Robert Kennedy, soprannominato Radio per la sua collezione di radio d'epoca e l'amore per la musica, è un tipo solitario che vive a Anderson e passa le giornate a spingere un carrello della spesa su e giù per le strade della città. Un giorno, Harold Jones, uno degli uomini più rispettati della città e allenatore della popolare squadra di football della scuola, fa amicizia con lui. Lo invita agli allenamenti e alle partite, lo fa partecipare alle sue lezioni a scuola malgrado l'iniziale scetticismo della preside Daniels e lo difende davanti ai giocatori, agli studenti e agli insegnanti. Anche la vita di Jones si arricchisce notevolmente grazie a Radio, dal quale impara ad apprezzare il valore dell'amicizia e della famiglia.
Per contrapporsi ad una parte della comunità che vuole Radio fuori dalla scuola, Harold annuncia le sue dimissioni da coach della squadra di football. A fine anno tra i diplomati c'è anche Radio, che...
